Israelis and Palestinians in Gaza are urged to stop violence

Hardeep Singh Puri

The violence by Israelis and Palestinians in Gaza has to stop, says the representative of India to the United Nations, Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri.

Ambassador Puri is the President of the Security Council for this month, but following an emergency meeting late Wednesday, he spoke to reporters as the representative of his country, saying the Security Council was working on a communiqué on the ongoing violence in Gaza.

"It is our expectation that the Council's meeting which concluded at 10:35 p.m. will help de-escalate the situation and impress upon the parties the need to exercise maximum restraint so that the situation does not deteriorate any further. In short, the message that must resonate from this meeting is that the violence has to stop." (Duration: 22")

There are reports of continued rocket attacks from Gaza into southern Israel and of Israeli air strikes on Gaza.
