International community urged to help Libya to combat impunity
Listen /The international community has been urged to help the government of Libya combat impunity and reinforce a culture of the rule of law.
The appeal has come from the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Fatou Bensouda, who presented her report to the Security Council on Wednesday.
She told the Council that the government of Libya is committed to working with the ICC and is encouraged to redouble its efforts.
Ms. Bensouda said that Libya is facing challenges as it goes through a political transition but stressed that justice must remain a key element in this transition.
"I call on the international community and in particular this Council to intensify their efforts to assist the government of Libya in any way they can to combat impunity and reinforce a culture of the rule of law. I believe that by working together we can help address threats to Libya's security both from within and outside that have been created by past and ongoing criminality." (Duration: 27")
Ms. Bensouda also encouraged the government of Libya to finalize its comprehensive strategy to address all crimes and end impunity.
