Global community must show it cares about Sahel: UN envoyListen /
The international community must show that it cares about the Sahel region of Africa, says Romano Prodi, the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy.
The former Italian Prime Minister spoke to reporters late on Tuesday about his mission to help the Sahel region which faces a number of problems, including drought, hunger and conflict in Mali.
Mr. Prodi said his mission is more on humanitarian aid and development because without that, there would be no solution to the Mali problem.
The envoy said the first step is to push for unity in the Mali government.
"The humanitarian aspects and the development aspects are long-term but they must be initiated immediately. We must show that we care. So it will be my task to work also in trying to find funds, to mobilize people to make concrete action on that and I am already working with governments to try to create a fund on that." (Duration: 27")
The UN Special Envoy for the Sahel stressed the need to work together with different actors on the Sahel, including the African Union, France and the United Kingdom to find solutions for the region.
