Africa Industrialization Day 2012 focuses on intra-African tradeListen /
Accelerating industrialization for boosting intra-African trade is the theme of this year's Africa Industrialization Day, observed on the 20th of November.
This year's commemoration highlights the important role trade between African countries can play in reducing poverty, increasing food and nutrition security and supporting sustainable development.
According to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, African economies are amongst the fastest growing in the world.
But intra-regional trade accounts for only 10 per cent of the continent's commerce – significantly less than in other regions.
The Secretary-General said that eliminating constraints that impede trade expansion in Africa, like obsolete infrastructure and limited investment financing, can free the continent from its reliance on international aid and improve its resilience.
