The United Nations in Afghanistan hosted a film screening and round table discussions to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, observed on 25 November. Filmmaker Alka Sadaat says despite some improvements over the past decade, it is time for Afghan women to break their silence and raise their voices against the various forms of violence facing them.
Overseas Filipinos make agricultural investments 'From Rome to Home'
Mabini in The Philippines is known as "Little Italy" due to the number of residents who work in that country. Many of them have built huge houses back home which lie empty as the owners can't afford to return. Joanne Levitan reports on a financial education programme supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) that encourages Filipino workers abroad to invest in agricultural cooperatives in their country.
New low-cost tablet to help bridge the 'digital divide' in India
More than two billion people worldwide are online and that number should soon increase when 220 million schoolchildren in India begin using a low-cost tablet called the Aakash 2, launched this week at the United Nations. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says the challenge is to leverage the power of technology and bridge the digital divide so that all young people can benefit.
