• Seven of the 16 United Nations peacekeeping operations deployed around the world are in Africa. At the same time, the continent is contributing to the training of peacekeepers at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre based in Accra, Ghana. The Centre provides training in research and practical aspects of peacekeeping operations.

• Rural areas in Kenya are left behind in getting good quality health care for a number of reasons. One of them is that it is difficult to attract trained doctors and nurses to work in these areas, and funds are often scarce. However, thanks to the Health Sector Services Fund, which is supported by the World Bank, the situation is improving.

A forum on conflict and fragility opens in Liberia

• A forum on conflict and fragility opened in Monrovia, Liberia on Thursday. The meeting, which is co-hosted by the governments of Liberia and Finland, is focusing on Africa. It is the latest in a series of three UN-led thematic consultations on how to integrate issues of disasters, conflict and citizen security into a new universal development framework.
