UN urged to support African countries in unleashing their potentialListen /
The United Nations must continue to prioritize Africa's singular needs, General Assembly president Vuk Jeremić told ambassadors in New York on Wednesday.
He said the various UN agencies and programmes need to be engaged as never before in the task of supporting African nations to unlock their full potential.
"In my view, the overall credibility of this Organization may well stand or fall depending on whether it can help fulfil what one of the world's greatest living statesman, Nelson Mandela, once defined as his dream: dream of an Africa that is at peace with itself, the dream of realizing the unity of Africa, whereby its leaders combine in their efforts to solve for good the problems of this continent." The General Assembly is looking at ways to strengthen UN involvement with the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), an African Union initiative to address critical challenges on the continent.
