The joint UN-Arab League envoy for Syria has reiterated his call on the Syrian government and all sides in the conflict to observe unilateral ceasefires immediately.

Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi has made the appeal for this week's celebration of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.

Mr. Brahimi says he spoke with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad about this initiative when he met him on Sunday.

"It is a personal initiative and a call for every man and woman in Syria whether they’re individuals in the streets or villages and the fields or armed persons in the army or the opponents of the Syrian state. It’s an appeal to all of them to stop unilaterally, when everyone takes unilateral decision, it will be a collective decision. “

(Duration: 26")

Mr. Brahimi says he has also spoken with everyone he has met in Syria and outside the country about this initiative which is not part of the peace process for Syria.
