Poor access to schooling is one example of how the human rights of millions of girls worldwide are being trampled on.
Another is early marriage, which increases the risk of abuse, violence and health complications.
To recognize girls' rights and the unique challenges they face, the United Nations is celebrating the first International Day of the Girl Child on 11 October.
In this report by Dianne Penn we hear how the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) is helping villagers in India to stamp out early marriage.
