People around the world are being urged to take a stand for teachers whose profession is losing status.

The call has come from the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which is celebrating World Teachers Day on 5 October.

UNESCO's Director General, Irina Bokova says education, which is provided by teachers, is vital in building a more peaceful and prosperous 21st century.

Ms. Bokova says the teaching profession is changing across the world but the core of the vocation remains unchanged.

"The great poet, William Butler Yeats once compared education to the lightening of a fire. Teachers are the greatest sparks of all. Each of us remembers our favourate teacher. Each of us recalls the feelings of wonder and curiosity they fuelled in us. This is why today we must all take a stand for teachers."

(Duration: 25")

Ms. Bokova says UNESCO has launched a strategy to make the teaching profession more attractive, to improve teacher quality and to ensure better public policy.
