Syrian government agrees to ceasefire during Eid al-Adha
Listen /The government of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria has agreed to observe a ceasefire during the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha.
That's what the joint UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi told reporters in the Egyptian capital, Cairo on Wednesday.
Last week Mr. Brahimi called for a cease-fire during Eid Al-Adha festival celebrated at the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, which is scheduled to begin on 26 October.
“There is approval from the Syrian government on the ceasefire during the period of Eid al-Adha, and I think they will issue a statement either today or tomorrow about this. For other parties inside Syria, we have contacted those who were able to access the leaders of warring groups, most of them also agreed on the principle of a cease-fire."

Mr. Brahimi is trying to help find a political solution to the Syrian conflict in which about 30,000 people are reported to have died since the uprising began 18 months ago.
