Lakhdar Brahimi, joint Special Representative of the United Nations and the Arab League

The Joint UN-Arab League Special Representative for Syria is calling for a cease-fire ahead of one of the holiest holidays in the Muslim calendar.

Lakhdar Brahimi made the appeal during a visit to Iran where he held talks with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other senior officials.

The envoy appealed to the Iranian authorities to assist in achieving the cease-fire during Eid Al-Adha, the festival which is celebrated at the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. It is schedule to begin on 26 October.

On Monday Mr. Brahimi was in Baghdad, Iraq, where he spoke to journalists after meeting with the country's leaders.

“Thank you very much. We share with the President and the Prime Minister and with you your concerns for Syria and its many problems, and what it represents as a risk for its people and neighbours, but also for peace in the entire world. We talked about these concerns and these problems and I think we have agreed that, whatever the difficulties and the concerns are, we must try to help the Syrian people.” (Duration: 27″)
