The face of poverty

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says poverty is easy to denounce but difficult to combat.

On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, observed each year on the 17th of October, the Secretary-General says rampant poverty is linked to social unrest and threats to peace and security.

According to the ATD Fourth World Movement, a human rights-based anti-poverty organization, most people do not recognize that people living in extreme poverty are the victims of daily acts of violence.

Cristina Diez, who represents the organization, explained to Gerry Adams what it means to be extremely poor.
