A UN vehicle is shown badly damaged the day after an ambush in West Darfur, Sudan.

The killing of four peacekeepers in West Darfur has been strongly condemned by the joint United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur  (UNAMID).

The Mission says the peacekeepers were ambushed by unidentified assailants on Tuesday evening near El Geneina.

UNAMID spokesperson Chris Cycmanick says that Nigerian peacekeepers were returning from their patrol duties when they were attacked.

"They were on their way to our regional headquarters in El Geneina. They were about two kilometres from the headquarters when they were heavily fired upon from several directions. Our peacekeepers returned fire. Up to now what we know is that four of our peacekeepers were killed. Eight were injured, one is in critical condition. We are not sure who fired on them."

(Duration: 20")

UNAMID has called on the Government of Sudan to bring the perpetrators to justice.
