• Africa Week is being celebrated at the United Nations from the 15th to the 19th of October. It is happening as NEPAD, the New Partnership for Africa's Development, marks its 10th anniversary. NEPAD is a programme designed by African leaders to promote political and socio-economic transformation on the continent.
UNICEF supports birth registration in Malawi
• UNICEF is supporting birth registration in Malawi. The country has made progress in reducing child mortality which has dropped by some 60 percent in 20 years. The birth registration programme, together with other initiatives, is to facilitate access to social services and prevent child abuses, such as trafficking and early marriage.
Special Court for Sierra Leone nears completion of mandate
• The UN-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone is expected to complete its mandate soon. It was established by the UN and the Sierra Leonean government to prosecute perpetrators of war crimes during the country's 11-year civil war which started in 1991. The Court's President and Registrar say it has made an important contribution to the international criminal justice system.
