WHO obtaining information after novel coronavirus infection in Europe
Listen /The World Health Organization (WHO) is obtaining further information to determine whether there are any public health implications following reports of two confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in Europe.
Coronaviruses are a family of viruses which includes those that cause the common cold and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
Charles Appel reports.
WHO says the United Kingdom informed it about the latest case on 22 September.
It concerned a 49-year-old man from Qatar who had been airlifted to the UK a week before. He had previously travelled to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Laboratory testing by UK health authorities confirmed the presence of a novel coronavirus which closely matched a virus sequence taken from a Saudi national who died earlier this year in The Netherlands.
WHO says it is currently obtaining further information to determine the public health implications of these two confirmed cases.
