UN /Arab League envoy begins mission to SyriaListen /
The joint Special Representative of the United Nations and the Arab League for Libya, Lakhdar Brahimi, started his mission to Syria on Thursday.
The envoy is pressing ahead with his efforts to help end the conflict in the country, where thousands of people have been killed since the crisis began in March of last year.
Thousands more have fled to neighbouring countries to escape the conflict.
UN spokesperson Vanina Maestracci has more on the envoy's activities in Syria.
"During his visit to Syria, Mr. Brahimi will hold talks with the Government, and with representatives of the Syrian opposition and civil society. He will also meet the UN Country team. Mr. Brahimi is accompanied by Mokhtar Lamani, who will remain in Damascus to assume his new function as Head of the Office of the Joint Special Representative for Syria in Damascus."
