U.K. calls for redoubling efforts to support open societies

David Cameron, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland addressing General Assembly delegates
The international community needs to keep the faith and redouble its efforts for open societies.
This is the message delivered by Prime Minister David Cameron of the United Kingdom to the General Assembly on Wednesday.
He said the events taking place around the world, including riots on the streets and Syria's descent into a bloody civil war should not make people draw the wrong conclusion.
Mr. Cameron said today is not the time to turn back although the path to democracy is challenging.
"Democracy is not- and never has been – about simply holding an election. It is not one person, one vote, once. Democracy is about establishing the building blocks of true democracy, the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law, with the majority prepared to defend the rights of the minority, the freedom of the media, a proper place for the army in society and the development of effective state institutions, political parties and wider civil society."
