Swiss parliament urged to help UN achieve its goalsListen /
The Swiss parliament has been urged to help the United Nations achieve its goals, including the elimination of poverty and nuclear weapons and the promotion of human rights.
The appeal came from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who spoke to the parliament in Berne on Tuesday.
Mr. Ban congratulated the people of Switzerland as they marked the country's tenth anniversary as a United Nations Member State.
He said the United Nations needs the Swiss parliament to stay committed to the world's poorest and most vulnerable.
"Work with us to ensure that fiscal austerity does not undermine the global fight against poverty. Help us intensify our efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals as the deadline of 2015 draws near. Help us to guide climate change negotiations to a successful conclusion by 2015 so that we can have a legally-binding international agreement on climate change which will be effective by 2020."
Mr. Ban also appealed to the Swiss parliament to help make the UN Human Rights Council a strong and principled force, building on the leadership of Switzerland in creating the Council in the first place.
