Persons with disabilities want to be part of decisions affecting themListen /
Persons with disabilities want to be part of all the phases in the implementation of the Convention on their rights.
That's what was stressed by Yannis Vardakastanis, Chairperson of the International Disability Alliance (IDA) in New York on Wednesday.
Mr. Vardakastanis spoke at the start of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities also known as the CRPD which entered into force four years ago.
He said the United Nations needs to lead by example in advocating for the Convention everywhere in the world.
"The CRPD can be rightly and correctly implemented only if the organizations of persons with disabilities are consulted and involved in all phases of planning and implementation, at all levels, not only at the national but also at the UN level."
The current session is focusing on women and children with disabilities.
