Lifting of sanctions on Myanmar welcomed by Aung San Suu KyiListen /
A prominent campaigner for democracy in Myanmar has welcomed the lifting of sanctions against her country by the United States Congress this week.
Aung San Suu Kyi, Chairperson and General Secretary of the National League for Democracy of Myanmar spoke to reporters at UN headquarters in New York on Friday.
On Wednesday the U.S. Congress lifted sanctions on two top leaders of Myanmar which is also known as Burma.
Flanked by the United Nations Secretary-General who introduced her to the UN press corps, Ms. San Suu Kyi said that she had a good meeting with United States President Barack Obama.
"I am happy that sanctions have now been lifted because, as I have been saying rather ad nauseam, it is time now that the Burmese people took responsibility for the democratization of the country. I am very appreciative of what the U.S. Congress has done for many years to support our movement but now we have to try to work on our own, of course, with the continuing support and help of friends."
