High-level panel calls for justice for victims of sexual violence
Listen /World leaders are being urged to secure justice for the survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and gender-based crimes.
The call came during a high-level panel held against the backdrop of the annual debate in the UN General Assembly which opened in New York on Tuesday.
UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet participated in the meeting. She spoke to reporters after the event.
"We believe that ensuring access to justice for women is essential. Perpetrators must be brought to justice, and in that sense we have been working and we will continue working to develop a rapid response justice team that can support women's organizations and women that have been victims of rape to be able to bring those perpetrators to justice." Ms. Bachelet co-chaired the panel alongside United Kingdom Foreign Secretary William Hague, UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence Zainab Bangura, and Nobel Peace Laureates Leymah Gbowee and Jody Williams.
