Germany to highlight role of Arab League in Security Council
Listen /The role of the Arab League in the resolution of conflicts in the Middle East is to be highlighted during Germany's presidency of the Security Council this month.
That's what Ambassador Peter Wittig, the president of the Council told reporters on Wednesday, as he outlined the programme of the Council for September.
Ambassador Wittig said that one of the highlights for this month is a High Level meeting in the Security Council on 26 September to address developments in the Arab World.
He said the meeting will focus on the emerging role of the Arab League as what he called "a significant regional actor and contributor to conflict resolution."
"The Arab League has undergone a remarkable development over the last one or two years. It is, without any doubt a first rate regional actor with important decisions and resolutions contributing to the resolution of conflicts. And we want to acknowledge this emerging role and we want to explore the institutional ties between the Arab League and the United Nations." (Duration: 28")
Ambassador Wittig said the Secretaries-General of the United Nations and the Arab League will brief the Security Council in that meeting.
