WFP chief visits Sudan and South Sudan

A new arrival in South Sudan’s Yida camp gets her arm measured as part of malnutrition screening.

Ertharin Cousin, the Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme (WFP), on Monday began a three-day visit to the neighbouring countries of Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan.

She started her trip in Khartoum, where she met senior government officials, donor representatives and WFP staff.

On Wednesday, Ms. Cousin plans to travel to the town of Bor in Jonglei State, in South Sudan, where WFP has been assisting 300,000 residents and returnees with skills training and "food for assets" programmes.

In South Kordofan, Sudan, WFP plans to provide food assistance to a total of 170,000 people to help them to go through the rainy season which began in June.
