Government and opposition forces in Syria have been urged to open a dialogue and bring an end to the violence.

The appeal has come from the head of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) Lieutenant General Babacar Gaye as the conflict rages in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

Derrick Mbatha reports.

Lieutenant-General Babacar Gaye says he is extremely concerned about the continued violence in Syria.

Lt. General Gaye says he is particularly concerned about what he calls "the significant deterioration" in Syria's second largest city of Aleppo and its impact on the civilian population.

He is urging all those involved in the fighting to protect civilians and respect their obligations under international humanitarian law.

The head of UNSMIS says that dialogue is the only way to alleviate the suffering of civilians and bring the conflict to an end in Syria.
