UNHCR encourages Syrian refugees to register first

Listen /

Unrest in Syria since March 2011 has led to displacement of tens of thousands of civilians

Hundreds of people are fleeing Syria daily, according to the UN refugee agency UNHCR.

The agency says the refugees need to register so that they can receive assistance such as basic health care, school enrolment for children and other services.

However, says UNCHR spokesman Adrian Edwards, many refugees are reluctant to register.

"People tend to be reluctant because they fear the security implications if they return to Syria. That in general seems to be the reason that is holding people up." (Duration: 9″)

Adrian Edwards says refugees do receive some humanitarian assistance prior to registering, but registration is critical for the full range of services.
