UN remembers staff members killed in Baghdad in 2003

UN Deputy Secretary General Eliasson places wreath in honour of the memory of UN staff killed in action in Baghdad

Twenty-two United Nations staff members who died in a bomb attack at the Canal Hotel in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, nine years ago were remembered in New York on Friday.

United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson laid a wreath at a Public Lobby of the General Assembly in honour of the staff members who died on 19 August 2003.

In 2008 the General Assembly designated the day as World Humanitarian Day to honour the memory of all humanitarian workers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for peace.

Pop music superstar Beyoncé is this year helping the UN to inspire a billion people to perform good deeds in their honour.
