UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visits Police Academy in Timor-Leste’s capital, Dili

Timor Leste no longer needs United Nations peacekeepers and there are plans for their withdrawal later this year.

That's what UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said at the start of a two-day visit to the Asian country.

Mr. Ban said Timor-Leste has come a long way since its presidential and parliamentary elections in March 2011.

"It is in this positive atmosphere that the United Nations is preparing for the withdrawal of UNMIT at the end of this year. We have consulted with a wide range of Timor-Leste partners on a new form of engagement in Timor-Leste in view of UNMITs anticipated departure"  (Duration: 23")

Mr. Ban says Timor Leste can count on the United Nations' steady support as it makes further strides on its path towards continued stability and development.
