UN honours humanitarian workers as it marks World Humanitarian Day
Listen /In 2003 twenty-two UN staff members tragically lost their lives in the bombing of the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq.
To honour the memory of the staff and all humanitarian workers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for peace, the General Assembly proclaimed 19 August in 2008 as World Humanitarian Day.
Kristen Mildren works in Bangkok as a regional spokesperson for the UN's humanitarian affairs office (OCHA).
She tells UN Radio's Gail Walker that in recent years the day has become a time to highlight the efforts of the global family of humanitarian workers.
