Protesters in Manama, Bahrain.

Three UN independent experts are calling on the government of Bahrain to promptly release a jailed human rights defender.

They are also urging the authorities in the country to comply with the rights to peaceful assembly and expression.

Dianne Penn reports.

The UN experts are demanding an end to what they call a campaign of persecution against human rights defenders in Bahrain.

In a statement released on Thursday, they say the country's authorities must take measures to guarantee free expression by all, whether through social media or otherwise.

They also call for the prompt release of Nabeel Rajab who was recently sentenced to three years imprisonment for participating in peaceful gatherings in support of fundamental freedoms and democracy.

And they say Bahrain should immediately release all people arbitrarily detained for exercising their legitimate freedoms.
