UN to discontinue its mission of military observers in Syria

The mandate of United Nations military observers in Syria will not be renewed when it ends on 19 August.
The Security Council met in New York on Thursday to discuss the future of the mission known as UNSMIS.
Meanwhile, Valerie Amos the head of the United Nations humanitarian agency wrapped up her visit to Syria.
She was on a three-day mission to the conflict torn country and Lebanon to assess the humanitarian situation and highlight the need to increase relief assistance to the people affected by the conflict.
