UN-African Union peacekeeper killed in Darfur

• A peacekeeper with the joint UN-African Union mission in Darfur (UNAMID) was killed last Sunday. Unidentified gunmen opened fire at the mission's community policing centre inside the Otash camp for internally displaced people in Nyala, South Darfur. The Security Council has strongly condemned this attack and urged the Sudanese government to swiftly investigate it and bring the perpetrators to justice.

• The transitional government and institutions in Somalia end on 20 August. The Horn of Africa country has not had a stable government since the regime of Muhammad Siad Barre collapsed in 1991. The top UN envoy in Somalia is optimistic about the country's political transition to a stable and democratic order.
