A hurricane warning has been issued along the Gulf Coast in the United States as tropical storm Isaac gets stronger.

The warning has come from the U.S. National Hurricane Centre, which is one of the regional specialized centres of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

The Centre says the storm has a large area of tropical storm-force winds and is warning of a significant threat from storm surges.

Clare Nullis is WMO spokesperson in Geneva.

"The US National Hurricane Centre says that tropical storm Isaac is getting stronger and is on the verge of becoming a hurricane. The forecast track has the centre of the storm nearing the coast southeast Louisiana or Mississippi Tuesday afternoon and night US local time. A hurricane warning was in effect along the Gulf coast from the Alabama/Florida border westwards, including New Orleans."

Duration: 25"

At the same time, WMO says two tropical storms, namely Typhoon Tembin and severe tropical storm Bolaven are currently affecting the western North Pacific.

The China Meteorological Administration has warned of high winds and heavy rains in areas affected by the two typhoons.
