Standstill in Middle East peace process frustrating, says UN chief

Listen /

Secretary-General

The United Nations shares the frustration of the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas over the current standstill in the Middle East peace process.

That's what UN Secretary-General told reporters at Mehrabad International Airport in Teheran, before leaving Iran on Friday.

Mr. Ban said that during his visit to Teheran, he discussed a number of issues with leaders attending the summit of the 120-member Non-Aligned Movement.

He said the issues included the ongoing conflict in Syria, human rights, as well as the Iranian nuclear programme.

"I also had a very good meeting today with President Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine. I shared the President's frustrations with the current standstill in the Middle East peace process and agreed with him on finding a way forward. All members of the Quartet regard President Abbas as a real partner for peace and stand ready to fully support his efforts."
