Somalia’s Constituent Assembly

• Somali leaders on Wednesday overwhelmingly adopted a provisional constitution, following a week of negotiations. The Constituent Assembly brought together various elements of Somali society including elders, religious leaders, women and the Diaspora. The UN has welcomed the adoption of the constitution.

• One year after the revolution, Libya remains littered with numerous unexploded bombs and other explosive devices. The UN Mine Action programme is clearing the country of these explosive devices and securing ammunition stores. In addition it is coordinating the work of international NGOs operating in the North African country.

Nigerian government gives green light for oil cleanup in Ogoniland

• The Nigerian government has given the green light for a major oil contamination clean-up of Ogoniland in the Niger Delta. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has welcomed the decision to go ahead with the operation. UNEP, at the request of the government, conducted an assessment of oil pollution and its impact on public health and the environment in the region.
