Somali political and traditional leaders are being urged to ensure that a new parliament is selected so that the political transition in the country is successfully concluded on 20 August.

The appeal has come from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who says he has been encouraged by the progress achieved in the Horn of Africa country.

After decades of warfare, Somalia has been going through a process of peace and national reconciliation, guided by a roadmap drawn up in September last year.

Eduardo del Buey is the Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General in New York.

"The Secretary-General is seriously concerned about delays in the selection of a new Somali Parliament and recent acts of intimidation and violence which should not continue or be allowed to threaten the successful conclusion of Somalia's transition. He calls upon the Somali political leadership, the traditional Elders and other parties to rise above their differences and to act in the best interest of the Somali people."
