New UN-Arab League envoy for Syria meets UN chiefListen /
Newly appointed UN-Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi will have the full respect and support of the international community.
That's what UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the veteran Algerian diplomat during their meeting in New York on Friday.
Dianne Penn reports.
"Lakhdar Brahimi, who has previously served the United Nations in Iraq and Afghanistan, said he will spare no effort in serving the Syrian people.
The veteran diplomat said he was honoured, flattered, humbled and scared, when he received the call from the UN Secretary-General.
Ban Ki-moon expressed gratitude that Mr. Brahimi has taken on what he described as "a very important, crucial" job of joint special representative for Syria.
The Secretary-General stressed that it is crucially important that the Security Council and the whole United Nations system support the work of the new envoy.
