• The Mozambican city of Beira has won an award for disaster preparedness. The first RISK award has been given by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and its partners for the city's warning system for floods. UNISDR says Beira has won the 100,000 euro award because its system is efficient and effective.
Sudanese refugees in South Sudan face bad health conditions
• Thousands of Sudanese refugees in South Sudan face alarming health conditions, according to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR). The agency says the current rain and cold are making the situation worse for the refugees. UNHCR and its partners have launched a programme to improve hygiene in camps and settlements of the refugees.
A Ugandan student benefits from a Model UN conference
•Fifty students, faculty advisors and government representatives from 28 countries this week got a taste of what happens at the UN General Assembly in New York. They participated in the Global Model UN Conference, organized by the Outreach Division of the UN's Department of Public Information. One of the students says the experience has opened up infinite possibilities for her.
