Mozambican city wins award for risk preparedness

Beira, Mozambique

The city of Beira in the eastern part of Mozambique has won an award for putting in place a flood warning system for its approximately 450,000 inhabitants.

The first RISK award has been given by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) together with the Munich Re-Foundation and the Global Risk Forum based in Davos, Switzerland.

UNISDR says Beira has won the 100,000 euro award because its system is efficient and effective.

The mayor of the Mozambican coastal city Deviz Simango told Derrick Mbatha that Beira is a risk city because it is below the sea level.

He said the city council started to prepare for floods by training local communities a few years ago.
