France to keep Security Council focus on Syria and Mali in August

Listen /

Gérard Araud, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations

France assumes the rotating presidency of the Security Council this month, and the country's ambassador to the UN is hoping there will be concerted international action on Syria.

Gérard Araud says it was unfortunate that members have not adopted a resolution on the Syrian crisis, which has intensified over recent weeks.

The French Ambassador also would like to see action on Mali, where a military coup and conflict in the north have displaced more than 400,000 people both inside and outside the country.

Dianne Penn spoke to Ambassador Araud who says with the current shelling of the city of Aleppo, it would be impossible not to focus on Syria during his tenure as Security Council president.
