The fabled city of Timbuktu and its 15th century tombs are in imminent danger of destruction as fighting continues in Mali.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is so concerned, it placed Timbuktu on its list of World Heritage in Danger.

UNESCO is calling on all parties in Mali to safeguard the site, which is one of only a few in sub-Saharan Africa listed by the agency.

The organization held a special session this week to address the destruction and is creating a special fund to help Mali in the conservation of its cultural heritage.

UNESCO spokesman Roni Amelan, who was in St. Petersburg, Russia for the 36th session of the World Heritage Committee told Julie Walker how concerned the organization is about Timbuktu.
