UNESCO calls for an end of destruction to Timbuktu and starts fund

•The fabled city of Timbuktu and its 15th century tombs are in imminent danger of destruction as fighting continues in Mali. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is so concerned, it placed Timbuktu on its list of World Heritage in Danger. UNESCO is calling on all parties in Mali to safeguard the site, which is one of only a few in sub-Saharan Africa listed by the agency. The organization also started a special fund to help with conservation efforts.

A tough first year for South Sudan: SRSG Johnson

•The UN's top official in South Sudan says the country has been through a tough first year. Hilde Johnson, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for South Sudan, says internal violence, tensions with its northern neighbor and economic insecurity are the major challenges. The nation, which declared independence from Sudan, will mark its one year anniversary 9 July.

Refugee children face bombs in pursuit of an education in South Sudan

•The UN refugee agency UNHCR is coming to the aid of thousands of children fleeing fighting in the Nuba mountains of Sudan. They have journeyed without their parents, to a border town in South Sudan. The children, who are trapped by conflict, are in need of food, water, shelter and medical services.
