Secretary-General encourages member states to abolish death penalty
Listen /Countries are being urged to do their utmost to end the death penalty.
The call comes from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who spoke at a high level event on capital punishment at the United Nations on Tuesday.
Mr. Ban said more than 150 states have abolished the death penalty, a trend which he says is only growing stronger.
"The taking of life is too absolute, too irreversible, for one human being to inflict it on another, even when backed by legal process. Where the death penalty persists, conditions for those awaiting execution are often horrifying, leading to aggravated suffering.” (Duration:23″)
