Envoy details "vast improvement" in security in Darfur

The Security Council on Tuesday renewed the mandate for the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

UNAMID's role includes protecting civilians and creating a safe environment for aid delivery in the Sudanese province, where roughly two million people were displaced by a 2003 civil war.

Prior to the meeting, Madiha Sultan spoke to UNAMID chief Ibrahim Gambari who says although numerous challenges remain, there has been a "vast improvement" in the security situation over the past two years.

This includes a reduction in deaths as a result of confrontation between government forces and armed movements, or conflict over resources.
