"Deeply disappointed" by the failure of Security Council on Syria: Ban

Listen /

Ban Ki-moon

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he is deeply disappointed that the Security Council could not come to a consensus on Syria.

Russia and China used their power as permanent members of the Council to veto the draft resolution.

Mr. Ban said while in China he had very good discussions with the country's leadership, including President Hu Jintao, ahead of the Council's vote.

"I am deeply disappointed by the failure of the Security Council today over the situation in Syria. I had expected that the Security Council and the international community should have been united to send out a strong and united voice to save human lives." (Duration: 24")

The Secretary-General says it is now up to Member States of the Council to decide on the future of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria and he again urged world leaders to unite and take collective action.
