United Nations bike ride to promote sustainable transportationListen /
The United Nations is promoting biking as a sustainable form of transportation, by hosting a ride outside its headquarters in New York on Friday.
The event is just one of many taking place in advance of the UN's conference on sustainable development known as Rio+20 in Brazil this month.
Ambassador Herman Schaper of The Netherlands is one of the lead riders and organizer of the event.
"We thought it perhaps would be a good idea to give special attention to cycling as a way to help to develop a sustainable economy, sustainable cities, sustainable transport. And we're not saying it's the answer to all the problems but it can make a huge contribution. If you look at the predictions on developing countries become (sic) richer and cities become larger and how much more transport will be needed, it is very important that, particularly in those countries—and in China that's already happening—that people are aware of the role bicycles can play in helping to solve some of those problems which will inevitably appear at a certain moment when modernisation continues and urbanization continues."
