UNESCO has called on Syrian authorities to fully investigate the recent deaths of five journalists.
Director-General of Irina Bokova said the journalists, all Syrian citizens, were killed in May during a shelling. They lost their lives while trying to inform the Syrian people of the tragic events taking place in their country.
Ms. Bokova also called on all parties involved in the present conflict to take all necessary steps to improve safety for all media workers in Syria.
They are not only defending the right of the Syrian people to information and press freedom, she said, but are also exercising their own right to freedom of expression, which is vital for all societies.
Among other things, UNESCO, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is tasked with defending press freedom.
