UN responds to emergency in Myanmar
Listen /The UN refugee agency –UNHCR is stepping up its humanitarian response in Myanmar.
This follows the sudden escalation of violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state nearly two weeks ago.
UNHCR Spokesman Adrian Edwards said the agency is now responding to the request from the authorities in Myanmar for assistance.
“UNHCR will provide shelter material and basic aid, including blankets, mattresses and other essential household items to communities affected by the violence.”
Spokesman Adrian Edwards says UNHCR plans to deploy its field teams as soon as possible.
