UN observers in Syria

United Nations observers in Syria have been prevented from reaching the village of Mazraat al-Qubeir to verify reports of large-scale killings, according to the head of the monitoring mission for the country.

Syrian activists say at least 78 people were massacred in the village.

Charles Appel reports.

General Robert Mood, who heads the UN Supervision Mission in Syria, said in a statement Thursday that monitors have been stopped at Syrian Army checkpoints and in some cases turned back.

He also said they are receiving information from residents of the area that the safety of the observers is at risk if they enter the village.

General Mood said despite the challenges, the observers are still working to get into Mazraat al-Qubeir to try to establish the facts on the ground.
