UN Human Rights Council orders Syria inquiry

Syria at the Human Rights Council

The United Nations Human Rights Council has condemned last week's massacre of more than 100 people in Houla, a cluster of villages in central Syria and ordered an independent probe.

The Geneva based Council passed the resolution Friday with 41 in favor, 3 against including Russia, China and Cuba and 2 abstentions.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said the killings may amount to crimes against humanity and may be indicative of a pattern of widespread or systematic attacks against civilians.

The special session by the Council in Geneva was called to examine the deteriorating human rights situation in Syria, with a special focus on the recent killings.
